With case numbers still high, coronavirus testing remains essential, experts say

Last May, the city of Los Angeles turned a fabled baseball park into a mass testing site for the coronavirus. At its peak, Dodger Stadium was testing 16,000 people a day for the virus, making it the biggest testing site in the world, said Dr. Clemens Hong, who oversees coronavirus testing in Los Angeles County.

But in January, the city pivoted, converting the stadium into an enormous, drive-through vaccination site. Local demand for coronavirus testing has plummeted, Dr. Hong said. He said that he saw the evidence firsthand recently when he visited a community hospital: “The testing site had three people and the vaccine site had a line around the block.”

COVID-19 cases have stopped declining in New York City. Experts are trying to find out why. Nationwide, COVID cases have fallen dramatically since the winter peak and millions of vaccine doses started rolling out. Specifically, the New York City metropolitan area had a rate of nearly 260.6 cases per capita for the week ending March 21, the second highest case rate in the nation, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although cases are not as high as they were during the spring and winter surges, the city has “reached a plateau, which simply means that cases are no longer declining,” said Dr. David D.

Inova Health System partnered with Virginia Department of Health and George Mason University to look at the rate of COVID-19 in children. It was done in the Fall.

Some Long Covid Patients Feel Much Better After Getting the Vaccine

...a number of people ...are reporting that the post-Covid symptoms they’ve experienced for months have begun improving, sometimes significantly, after they got the vaccine. It’s a phenomenon that doctors and scientists are watching closely, but as with much about the yearlong coronavirus pandemic, there are many uncertainties.

Scientists are only beginning to study any potential effect of vaccines on long Covid symptoms. Anecdotes run the gamut: Besides those who report feeling better after the shots, many people say they have experienced no change and a small number say they feel worse.
