Global water reservoir volumes decline despite construction boom, study says
Global reservoir volumes fell during the last 20 years despite a construction boom that drove up storage capacity, a new study showed on Tuesday, suggesting that new dams will not be enough to solve growing strain on the world's water supplies.

More companies setting 'net-zero' climate targets, but few have credible plans, report says
A growing number of companies are pledging to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to “net zero” to curb climate change, but a report says the goal is rarely supported by a credible plan. According to the report published Monday, the number of publicly listed corporations aiming for net zero increased from 417 to 929 since late 2020. Researchers say they found that less than 5% of the companies they examined met basic credibility criteria. They say companies often fail to include the emissions caused by their products in their emission tallies.

A third day of smoky air gives millions in US East Coast, Canada a new view of wildfire threat
With weather systems expected to hardly budge, the smoky blanket billowing across the U.S. and Canada from wildfires in Quebec and Nova Scotia will possibly persist into the weekend.

UN climate chief says fossil fuel phase out key to curbing warming but may not be on talks’ agenda

UN climate chief calls fossil fuel phase out key to curbing warming but may not be on talks' agenda
The United Nations climate chief says phasing out all fossil fuels is central to curbing global warming. But in an interview with The Associated Press he also says the concept might not make it on agenda of “make-or-break” international climate negotiations this fall. United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell says he couldn’t quite promise that the idea of a fossil fuel phase out would get a spot on the agenda in climate talks because that's up to the conference president.

Warming triggering carbon dioxide in air hits new peak, growing at near-record fast rate

Amount of warming triggering carbon dioxide in air hits new peak, growing at near-record fast rate
The cause of global warming is showing no signs of slowing as heat-trapping carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere has increased to record highs in its annual Spring peak. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations says carbon dioxide levels in the air are jumping at one of the fastest rates on record. Those levels are now the highest they’ve been in more than 4 million years. The last time the air had similar amounts was during a less hospitable hothouse Earth before human civilization.

Earth is danger zone in nearly all ecological ways--study

Earth is 'really quite sick now' and in danger zone in nearly all ecological ways, study says
A new study says Earth has pushed past seven out of eight scientifically established safety limits and into “the danger zone,” not just for an overheating planet that’s losing its natural areas, but for well-being of people living on it. The study, published Wednesday, looks not just at guardrails for the planetary ecosystem but for the first time it includes measures of “justice,” which is mostly about preventing harm for groups of people.
